The Meikle Carewe Windfarm Action Group was formed in 2000 as the voice of of a small rural
community concerned with the plans of a large developer to construct a wind energy power station
in the N.E. of Scotland near Stonehaven (south of Aberdeen).
The location, in rural Netherley, is situated on a prominent ridge over several hills
including Meikle Carewe and Curlethney (grid ref. NO 828920 and 839918 respectively). The site would
be in very close proximity to many houses and farms (the nearest house being only around half a mile away).
The original application for ten turbines was rejected by councillors in December 2001 but in 2006, a 'new' proposal was submitted. This time
a development consisting of 12 wind turbines, each reaching some 70m (230ft) is proposed. Although marginally shorter
than before (previously 78m high turbines were proposed) and slight changes in position are suggested to lessen the impact
there is no substantial difference (even more turbines!) and the concerns of six years ago still remain.
Our primary concerns include health & safety issues, damage to the environment, visual impact and noise disturbance.
An earlier version of the scheme
Proximity to homes is unprecendented in Scotland: 12 within a km or so, 90 within 2km and around 180 houses within 3km.
McWAG IS NOT AGAINST THE PRINCIPLE OF GENERATING ELECTRICITY FROM RENEWABLE SOURCES BUT FEEL THE NEED FOR STRICTER CONTROL RELATING TO THE SELECTION OF POTENTIAL SITES ESPECIALLY FOR SCHEMES THAT PROVIDE LITTLE OR NO ENVIRONMENTAL BENEFIT.
